James VandenBerg picked
up the guitar at age 15, having been inspired by singer/songwriters
such as Paul Simon and James Taylor, and also by the electric
guitar sounds of the classic progressive rock of the seventies. As
James developed his proficiency on the guitar, he became
drawn to the various jazz sounds of Pat Metheny, John Scofield,
Al DiMeola and Alan Holdsworth. While still a teen,
James played regularly as a liturgical musician at Catholic
churches in and around Detroit. At the same time, he
also played electric guitar in a variety of rock, jazz and
fusion bands. James' eclectic style grew to encompass bluegrass and classical guitar, and his versatility, proficiency and clear tenor voiceled to high demand in the wedding band
circuit around Detroit. Upon moving to the Asheville
area in 1998, James discovered the Jubilee! community, where
he plays regularly with the Jubilee! World Beat Band with
Daniel and Sherman. James continues to play a wide
variety of styles, with both Current Invention, and with
his own rock/fusion group Atomic
Sauce.
Sherman Hoover started
playing electric bass at the age of 13, played and sang
in his first rock band in high school and went on to study
jazz and classical music at UNC-Chapel Hill. Since then,
he has played in several bands developing his improvisational
skills and exploring a variety of styles of jazz, rock,
pop, and world beat music. His favorite style is “progressive rock,” an
experimental fusion of jazz, rock and classical. He has been
the regular bass player for Sunday morning services at Jubilee
Community since 1997 and has also played in several college
and community productions of Broadway musicals. He continues
to explore and expand his experience of musical expression
through live performances and recording projects.
